What Is Electric Wrench
An electric wrench is type of wrench that is powered by other means than human force. A typical power source is compressed air. There are two main types of electric wrenches: Impact wrenches and air ratchet wrenches or pneumatic ratchet wrenches.

The electric wrench replaces your ratchet wrench or breaker bar, highly increasing your productivity and making tightening and loosening nuts and bolts a much quicker and easier process. They get their immense torque from a hammering mechanism in the motor that delivers extremely strong and quick concussive blows. This creates a huge amount of force which enables them to loosen even the toughest nuts and bolts.
The motor applies a continuous sudden twisting motion to the nut or bolt, usually in short bursts, and this will eventually bring movement (loosening or tightening) to the bolt.
They are used in applications where a much greater force is required such as when the nut may not break loose, or a hand wrench wont do the job. They are most commonly air powered or battery powered, both of which you can shop at toolstop.
When used properly, there is no lug nut - no matter how tight - that an electric wrench can't budge.
Easy to light or lose the bolts
An electric motor that can produce high-speed rotational power output is included with the electric torque wrench. This allows the electric wrench to tighten and loosen the bolts quickly. The equipment automatically stops the torque output when the predetermined torque value is attained. But sometimes, this can be risky the solution is to protect things correctly.
Save labor costs
With cordless wrenches, you can enjoy the benefits of a compact size and lower weight than hydraulic ones. This means you only need one operator to handle the equipment and complete the task, resulting in significant labor cost savings.
High efficient application
Tightening high-strength bolts and nuts—frequently utilized for specialized engineering projects requiring torque beyond the typical range—is a common practice in high-strength applications.
An electric torque wrench is perfect for high-intensity applications due to its high output. It offers enough torque to ensure that high-strength bolts are tightened following particular design specifications and technical standards.
Accuracy
The excellent accuracy of the electric wrench guarantees proper bolt tightening. By taking the necessary precautions, we can confidently avoid the risks associated with bolt joint failure, such as over-tightening or under-tightening. You won't have to waste time retightening bolts since you can be confident that you are applying the proper torque levels for each application the first time.
High torque output
The electric torque wrench can handle the attachment of numerous huge and significant pieces of equipment, including wind power production equipment, bridges, building structures, and oil and gas equipment, thanks to its large torque output.
Large torque outputs are typically needed in these applications to guarantee that the bolts are tightened to the engineering specifications, even under demanding operating circumstances and heavy loads.
The follow specifications determine the functionality of an electric wrench.
● Output torque: Amount of torque generated at the output shaft.
● Drive size: The size of the socket drive on the electric wrench.
● Impacts per second: The number of times the impact hammer hits the anvil causing rotational motion in the output shaft.
● Input pressure: The fluid pressure at the input of the electric wrench. The input pressure only applies to pneumatic or hydraulic operated electric wrenches.

A brushless battery motor using lithium-ion battery is the most common source of power for battery torque wrenches. The voltage required is designated by the amp hours of a battery.
A complete battery with lower ampere hour must have higher voltage, and a physically larger size, to make up for loss of capacity. A battery motor that can handle higher-Ampere hour batteries are more costly, and the internal electronics are more complicated. The more complex the electronics, the more accurate the motor is when shutting off at a desired torque value. A very common battery combination would be compact 18 volt with a 5.0-ampere hour capacity. This combination varies by manufacturer.
Key Considerations When Buying an Electric Wrench
Some of the key considerations when looking to purchase an electric wrench are:
● Power: Power, measured by torque, is one of the main considerations when choosing an electric wrench. Torque is measured in Newton metres (Nm). The higher the number, the greater the force. electric wrenches range in power from 100Nm up to, and above, 1000Nm.
Unlike most other drills, electric wrenches have an additional function when undoing bolts, which is referred to as 'breakaway' or 'nut busting' torque. This is when an electric wrench uses an initial burst of extra power to loosen a particularly tight bolt (perhaps as a result of rust), before continuing to use the machines standard torque for the remainder of the loosening. The machine applies this automatically. Breakaway torque is also measured in Nm, although it likely exceeds the electric wrenches' standard torgue. A 1000Nm electric wrench can have a nut busting torque of 1700Nm.
Electric wrenches are very powerful, so care needs to be taken during use to prevent bolts from being sheared off and to prevent materials from being damaged.
● Size: The size of an electric wrench is mainly down to the bolts it will need to undo and the torque that is required.
● For example: A 1005Nm electric wrench (a large tool) will work with M12 to M30 bolts (M12 = 12mm diameter, M14 = 14mm diameter etc.). A 280Nm electric wrench (medium size) will work with M8 -M16 bolts. The smaller compact 180Nm tool will work with M8 - M16 bolts.
It is very important that you choose the correct electric wrench for the size of the bolt that needs to be tightened or loosened.
● Speed: Some electric wrenches have a selection of speeds. Increasing the speed setting on an electric wrench will also typically increase the power (torque). Having the ability to change the speed setting on an electric wrench is useful as it can help to prevent damaged caused from the use of too much force.
● Power source: The majority of electric wrenches are cordless. The main voltage used is 18V but some are available in 12V. There are some mains powered electric wrenches available (primarily in 110V for site use). These are good if you need sustained power all day long but generally aren't as powerful as their cordless counterparts, due to the recent advances made in li-ion battery technology. 18v is the most popular choice of electric wrench as they can produce almost twice as much torque as the corded options. They usually come with two batteries, so while one is charging the other can be used. It also allows for a greater scope of movement while performing the job in hand.
● Chuck type: There are only a few different chuck sizes available for electric wrenches, which are are all square. They come in 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1" sizes. The chuck sizes correspond to the impact sockets you have available, or wish to use on the machine.
List of Most Common Electric Wrench Mistakes You Must Avoid
Whatever the electric wrench you decide to use, you must use them the right way in order not to damage the equipment you are assembling. Here are some of the most common mistakes which you can avoid when using an electric wrench.
Over tightening fixings
This is the main issue for unpractised users who think little of the torque that an electric wrench is capable of delivering. In a bid to guarantee that the nut or screw is satisfactorily fixed, users usually end up stretching or stripping the wrench threads.
A lot of times components are over-tightened and secured beyond the manufacturers' listed specifications. Even though this might work for certain components having a broader room for torque adjustments, for certain other components with not as much of a room for exceeding torque, this might do more harm than good.
All in all, the best way to prevent over-tightening is to use an electric wrench only specific purposes. This includes removing or loosening a fitting out, tightening your fasteners, make use of a torque wrench.
Damaging threads
If you use your electric wrench to tighten a nut or bolt that is cross-threaded, you'd end up damaging the threads further – irreparably so. The best way around avoiding this damage would be to manually thread the bolt or not in the required manner prior to using the electric wrench.
Using mismatched sockets
One thing you must remember is that ordinary sockets are incompatible with electric wrenches. Use only dedicated electric wrench sockets with your wenches to ensure there are no slips and that the cyclic loads are tackled well.
Purchasing the wrong wrench size
Keep in mind the size of the fasteners and fittings you'd be working with. Doing so will definitely help you buy the right size. The torque rating of your electric wrench should be greater than the torque required by an application.
Purchasing the wrong wrench kind
There are different types of electric wrenches that you can choose from. Electric electric wrenches work best for domestic repair works et al.
